Got my bonus check and the Miata will now be getting a set of Flyin Miata V-Maxx sport coilovers, FM swaybars, poly bushings for the suspension, a new top, and Hawk HPS front brake pads. I also have a 3 day weekend coming up, guess I know what I'll be doing over that!

The last time I got a bonus was when I worked at a gas station. Good to know I've moved up in the world.

Can't go wrong with the FM VMaxx. I'm really happy with my set.

Good to hear, I've heard nothing but good things about them in relation to the performance and quality for the price. I'd love to be able to afford a set of Ohlins or something, but this build has something of a budget so a set of $2,000+ coilovers just isn't in the cards for me. At least not right now.

good luck installing all that booty in a weekend! Also I hate you. Also Also that is quite the bonus.

Must be a nice bonus, mine was a dinner for two to Boston Pizza.

Lol, yeah, it's up there with my cousin finishing medschool at the same time I finished my undergrad.....and we graduated HS at the same time. Ah well, I take comfort in having far less debt than he does.

Damn skippy. She's also paying for a house to be built on 3 acres. I'll stick with my 60 year old house and apartment-sized mortgage.

More than likely it'll end up being the coilovers, bushings, and sway bars that get put on that weekend, unless I can get some help and get someone to do the brakes for me while I'm working on the bushings or top. That said, whatever doesn't get done, just gives me an excuse to work on the car later.

Indeed.....though imagine the garage you could have with a 3 acre plot. 2 post lift, plenty of space, and room for pretty much any tool you could ever need! .......actually it's probably a good thing I don't have a bigger garage, I'd be paying off the equipment that filled it for the rest of my life.
![]() 02/04/2014 at 10:53 |

I would have the same issue. I've got an extra-wide 1 car garage and still want to put a 2 post lift in it! I'm thinking my next place needs 3 bays and a loft.

Lol, that would be awesome, but I'm pretty sure that unless such a place also included gigabit internet, my fiance would kill me. I'll have to make due with my 2 car garage, though I'm thinking of taking some cues from the "12 gauge garage" and possibly recessing a lift into the floor eventually, but we'll see there are other improvements that need to happen to the house first.

If I was living alone house improvements would amount to making sure it's generally weather-resistant and warmish during winter. The rest of my funds would be diverted to the garage :D

Yeah same here, though some would go to making sure the HOA stayed off my case too, but yeah keeping the fiance happy is important to continued survival of both myself and my hobbies.

Man that sounds exactly like what my NB needs. . . Enjoy your work that needs to be done. From what I've read doing the top is a whole day affair if not a two day job for the first time getting it done.

I will, and this is only the beginning. Unfortunately the coilovers are on back order so it'll be a while longer than expected till they go one. Ah well, still have the new top, front brakes, and fogged tinting to strip so there is plenty that can be done with the stuff coming soon.

Nice, once you get that all done you will have a car that drives like brand new. Did you get the sway bar mount reinforcements? I guess they like to rip out if you put a bigger sway in the front and drive really hard.
One day I keep telling myself that I'll have new suspension on Cookie. For right now I'm pretty happy with how she performs though. I'm not tracking or auto-xing her so for mild canyon drives and all that she works plenty good.

Not yet, but it was in the plans. I won't be driving it too hard till I get a new clutch for it anways. I figure this round will get me through they year, then next will be upgraded clutch, lighter flywheel, reinforced swaybar mounts and adjustable endlinks, and then a few more maintenance items and new interior bits.

Not bad. What year is your car and how many miles does it have? I got a 99 with about 127,000ish miles on it.
![]() 02/04/2014 at 13:23 |

it's a 99 with 150k on it. Not gonna lie it's in rough shape cosmetically, but she runs well, and most of the bits that are worn out are things I would be replacing regardless. Plus half the fun is going to be building her up the way I want and then making her shine....she'll need a new front bumper cover and paint before that happens though.....and driver side door panel...and carpet....and seats....yeah it's going to be a process, but if I wanted to work on something that already looked perfect I'd be modding my Focus ST.
![]() 02/04/2014 at 13:29 |

Yeah, my 99's paint is pretty rough and i'm about 95% sure it was in a wreck that took out the hood and passenger side. . . But wasn't reported. . . What makes it worse is that it was the nicest one on the market when I was looking and was impatient and overpaid on it so. . . I guess I may be stuck with her for a while. The good thing is that some of the scratches all over the trunk disappear with a good coat of wax and if you don't look at it from directly above. . . I never thought I would end up loving the miata as much as I do. Its pretty insane how long these cars can last with maintenance.
![]() 02/04/2014 at 13:35 |

Ouch, I got mine for $3k so I've got no complaints about what I paid for it. There were honestly a lot nicer ones on the market, but this one was the cheapest that wasn't basically ready for the scrapyard, and I bought it as a project to begin with. And yeah even with the dead shocks I can already see how much fun this car is going to be.....and how much more fun it will be after the eventual turbo build :D
![]() 02/04/2014 at 13:38 |
|
Man, I would love a turbo but I don't think that will ever happen for my car. But you never know. . . Enjoy your build process.

I will, you too!

Have you looked into all the sway bar options? Some say the FM sway bars aren't ideal.
I've got the HPS pads, and frankly, I'd go with something that has a little more bite next time. They aren't bad at all, but I kinda want more.

I did, and saw a lot of mixed info, but the sense I got is that the autocross guys liked the larger Racingbeat bar, and the track guys have fewer issues with the slightly smaller FM bar. I got the co's & bars as a pack so there was a bit of a discount which is why I chose the one I did at this time, but worse comes to worse, if I don't like the way it makes the car behave I can always sell it off and buy the RB one later.
